What is your role at MSU?
I serve as the Director of Undergraduate Academic Advisor Resources & Engagement (UAARE). Our work supports MSU’s undergraduate academic advising community through professional learning and development, resources, assessment, recognition, and opportunities for connection and collaboration. My role focuses on the strategy and infrastructure that help academic advisors—and the advising community as a whole—continue to learn, grow, and support student success.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy creating opportunities for people to learn from one another. Academic advisors across MSU bring tremendous knowledge, experience, and creativity to their work, and I value finding ways to connect that expertise across colleges and units. I especially enjoy taking what we learn through assessment, feedback, and conversation and turning it into meaningful resources, learning opportunities, and improvements.
What guides your approach to this work?
I believe the people doing the work often hold some of the most important knowledge about how to strengthen it. My approach is collaborative, appreciative, and data-informed. I try to create space to understand what is working, identify what people need, and build from the strengths and expertise that already exist within our advising community.
What do you hope academic advisors experience through UAARE?
I hope advisors feel supported, connected, valued, and able to continue growing throughout their careers at MSU. I also want advisors to see themselves as part of a larger community of educators whose collective work contributes to the undergraduate student experience.
What is something you are especially interested in professionally?
I’m particularly interested in assessment and organizational learning—how we use what we learn from students, advisors, and our work to make thoughtful decisions about what comes next. I’m also interested in how we create sustainable learning ecosystems that support professional growth beyond individual trainings or events.
