Frequently Asked Questions

This page answers common questions about who can use this website, the training and resources available, and how to get involved in professional development opportunities. If you don’t find what you’re looking for here, please reach out to UAARE-info@msu.edu — we’re happy to help!

Who is this site for?

This site is designed for undergraduate academic advisors at all levels, including new and experienced undergraduate advisors.

I’m a graduate advisor, can I use the resources on this website?

While this website was developed with undergraduate academic advisors in mind, all academic advisors are welcome to explore its resources. Our team operates under the Office of Undergraduate Education and primarily supports undergraduate advising. However, many of the resources may also be relevant to graduate advisors. We encourage graduate advisors to consult with their supervisors and the Graduate School for additional support tailored to their specific needs.

What platforms and systems should I be familiar with? What resources are available?

Academic advisors should become familiar with both the Campus Solutions Student Information System and the Electronic Student Academic Folder, as these are two of the most commonly used tools in advising. Visit the Systems and Tools page to locate trainings related to these various systems.

Is there a resource hub for common student referrals (e.g., mental health, financial aid, tutoring)?

The Student Support Resources page features an extensive list of campus resources to help you connect students with the support they need.

What training is available for new undergraduate advisors?

Yes! Visit the New Advisor Onboarding page to get started. There, you'll find a welcome packet and a training course designed specifically for new undergraduate academic advisors.

How do I get access to advisor training resources?

If you're a new advisor at MSU, we encourage you to start with the New Advisor Onboarding page. This resource will help you transition into your role, familiarize yourself with key advising systems, and understand important university policies and procedures.

Required campus-wide trainings—such as FERPA and the Relationship Violence and Sexual Misconduct (RVSM) training—are listed on this website. You’ll also find optional professional development opportunities, including Active Violence Awareness Training, Basic/Essential Needs Educator Training, and Quest: Building Capacity for LGBTQA+ Inclusion. These, along with resources for teaching courses, are available on the Career Development and Advancement page.

Training materials for advising systems, including the Student Information System (SIS), can be found on the Systems and Tools  page.

How do I enroll in upcoming training sessions or workshops?

Visit the Events page to explore upcoming training sessions and workshops. If you missed a session, most are recorded and available in the Video Library.

Are any advisor development sessions recorded or available on demand?

Yes! If you missed a session, most are recorded and available in the Video Library.

Who do I contact with questions about advisor development opportunities?

Please contact our team at UAARE-Info@msu.edu. We would love to partner with you!

How do I propose a training topic or lead a session?

Please contact our team at UAARE-Info@msu.edu. We would love to partner with you!
