Erika Espinoza (she/her/ella)

I love that my advising role gives me the opportunity to serve both Exploratory Preference students at MSU and prospective transfer students through our Envision Green initiative at Lansing Community College. In both roles I have the privilege of meeting students from various walks of life. I love that as an advisor I get to know students at a deeper level and build a relationship of trust where they hopefully feel they matter and belong.
My favorite spot on campus is the Horticulture Garden. I love being in nature! I find peace and relaxation when I'm outdoors and the Horticulture Garden has lots of places to walk around and/or sit. Plus it has beautiful plants and flowers throughout the year.
I attended UC Berkeley for my undergraduate education and obtained a bachelor’s in political economy with a double minor in public policy and city and regional planning. I decided to go back for my master's degree five years after graduating. Fun fact, I did not think I would ever go back to school, and I also didn't know much about graduate school when I graduated from undergrad. I obtained a Master of Science in Counseling with an option in College Counseling and Student Services from Cal State Northridge.
I had the honor of receiving two awards during the ‘22-‘23 academic year at MSU. At the César E. Chávez and Dolores Huerta Celebration, I was awarded the MSU Staff of the Year (Chávez-Huerta Humanitarian Award). I also received the Corazon Puro/Pure Heart Award at the 2023 MSU Latinx Awards. This award is given to a Latinx Faculty/Staff for their tireless commitment and dedication to the services of Latinx students.
I’m a proud daughter of immigrants, a former low-income student, and a first-generation Latina professional and college graduate. I am deeply passionate about social justice and being an advocate for historically underserved and marginalized communities, whether that is in a higher education setting or in my community. I approach the work that I do through an equity and inclusion lens and take a student-centered approach. With that said, I'm passionate about finding ways to better serve and support our undocumented, DACAmented and mixed status students at MSU.
